“I wish I had known about the program sooner! Taking this course was one of the best decisions I have made. I learned to be more empathetic and understanding with my daughter. ”
When your child is showing symptoms of a mental health condition, it’s difficult to know where to turn for help. NAMI Basics can help point you in the right direction. NAMI Basics is a free online course for parents, grandparents, and other full-time caregivers of children with mental health conditions.
Can NAMI Basics help me?
Research shows that NAMI Basics helps parents to better understand their child’s condition. Additionally, parents typically feel more capable and confident as caregivers after taking the course. Parents who have participated in NAMI Basics report that they feel better about themselves as caregivers, and also feel more capable of advocating for their children.
My child hasn’t been diagnosed. Is this course for me?
Yes! Your child does not need to have an official diagnosis for you to benefit from NAMI Basics. If your child is showing symptoms of a mental health condition, we encourage you to attend the course, even if they haven’t yet been diagnosed.
We’ll talk about navigating the mental health system and provide practical tips that can help de-escalate situations with your child, regardless of their diagnosis. The information we’ll cover together in the course can still help you and your family, even without a formal diagnosis.
“NAMI Basics bridges the gap. It provides help that can’t be found in a doctor’s office.”
What does the course cover?
We’ll talk about what causes mental health conditions, symptoms of common mental health conditions, treatment options and how they work, and provide practical skills and tips for communicating with your child and de-escalating situations. We’ll also discuss navigating the mental health and school systems, including information on IEPs. You’ll have the chance to connect with other parents in similar situations.
You don’t have to go it alone.
Raising a child with a mental health condition can be demanding, confusing and isolating, but you are not alone. There are other parents who understand what you’re going through. Additionally, course instructors have personal experience raising children with mental health conditions. They’ve been where you are, and are here to support you.
“This class was unexpectedly wonderful! I did not expect to learn so very, very much! It covers so much more than basics that the title doesn’t do it justice.”
